5 Tips for Managing Your Weight Over the Holidays

The holiday season is always sweet — and we don’t just mean because of the time with friends and family. Between Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pies, and holiday cookies, there’s decadent food to tempt you at every turn during this time of year.

But that doesn’t mean you have to ring in the new year wishing you could undo the last few months. At Island Lotus Health & Wellness in Brunswick, Georgia, Serena Skinner, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, and our team work with people to help them stay on track with their body goals.

In addition to our medical weight loss program and body-contouring BTL Vanquish Me™ treatment, we also want to offer support and guidance. So we rounded up our top five tips for managing your weight over the holidays.

#1: Choose your cheats wisely

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for decadent food. So make sure you’re mindful about when you decide to go big. If you know, for example, that you just can’t resist your friend’s cookies and their party is this weekend, work to eat healthily throughout the week.

In short, plan ahead. Know when you’ll eat nutritious, balanced meals and when you’ll give yourself more leeway. That way, you can enjoy your favorite parts of the season without making every meal a cheat meal.

#2: Eat before you go

If you’re heading to someone’s event where you doubt you’ll have healthy food options, have a small meal before you go. Showing up satiated ensures you don’t overload your plate, plus it can help you pass on appetizers, too. This helps you keep your calorie intake under control.

#3: Offer to host

Why not have the party at your house? That way, you can ask people to bring specific dishes and keep the menu balanced and healthy. Plus, if you cook yourself, you can make healthy holiday food swaps, like switching out mashed potatoes for mashed cauliflower. Your guests will thank you for helping them to get at least one decent meal this holiday season.

#4: Cut back on cocktails

For starters, holiday beverages are notorious for packing in the sugar (read: empty calories).

Additionally, though, one too many can lessen your self-control, sending you back for seconds on dessert. Keep an eye on your alcohol intake to make it easier to curb your calorie consumption.

#5: Make time for yourself

Stress and weight gain are linked. Don’t let yourself get too overworked this holiday season.

Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep — another way to bolster your self-control — and making time for yourself to relax. That way, you can avoid stress eating and the weight gain that comes with it.

The holidays are here — but that doesn’t mean you need to pull out your baggiest clothes. For support to stay on track with your weight goals through the end of the year and beyond, contact our team at Island Lotus Health & Wellness. Call us or book your appointment online today.
