Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair reduction work?

The Icon delivers heat energy through the skin to target individual hair follicles. When the pigment in the follicle heats up, it’s shattered and destroyed, so hair can no longer grow. The laser safely penetrates your outer skin and causes no damage.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Most areas that have unwanted hair can effectively be addressed with Icon treatments. These include:

  • Chest
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Bikini line
  • Underarms

Talk to Serena or Dr. Lucas about where you’d appreciate hair removal to find out if the laser treatment is right for you.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal treatments are relatively swift, as the Icon laser targets hundreds of follicles with each pass. You may feel a bit of tingling and heat during the session. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. If you’re concerned about discomfort, a topical anesthetic may be applied to reduce any sensation.

You get no long-term irritation that sometimes occurs with waxing or shaving, either. You may have some redness and tenderness for a day or two following treatment – as if you had a sunburn -- but this resolves fast.

How many sessions will I need?

Hair grows in cycles. The laser treatment must hit each follicle that’s in a growth phase to be effective. A series of two to 10 sessions are usually sufficient to achieve the smooth skin you desire. Exactly how many sessions you’ll need depends on your skin tone and hair type. These sessions are typically scheduled four to eight weeks apart.

Do I need to schedule downtime following laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal requires no downtime. You can go back to work, school, or other regular activities following treatment.

You should avoid tanning for several weeks before and after a laser session, however. The sun can cause unwanted pigmentation that disrupts the laser’s ability to target follicles effectively. And following treatment, your skin is extra sensitive to the sun’s rays.
