Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

During a microneedling session, Serena or Dr. Lucas uses a device called the MicroPenⓇ to poke dozens of tiny holes in the surface of your skin. These controlled wounds are invisible to the eye, but trigger your body to produce more collagen and elastin – natural compounds essential to healthy skin structure and texture.

The micro-holes also serve as channels for deeper delivery of topical products, such as moisturizers, anti-aging serums, and platelet-rich plasma.

What skin concerns can microneedling address?

Microneedling improves the overall appearance of your skin. Specifically, the procedure can:

  • Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • Enhance the effectiveness of topical treatments
  • Soften the appearance of acne and other scars

Serena and Dr. Lucas evaluate your skin and your aesthetic goals to determine if microneedling is right for you.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling isn’t a heat treatment like a laser. While the movement of the MicroPen gliding across your skin can cause slight discomfort, a topical anesthetic eases sensation.

What kind of downtime is required after a microneedling session?

The procedure requires very little downtime. You may have some redness and mild swelling following your session, but this lasts for 24 hours or less. Unlike invasive surgical procedures, you have no incisions, significant blood loss, or long healing time.

What is a Vampire Facial with microneedling?

A Vampire Facial involves microneedling with the application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is derived from your own blood. You have a sample drawn from your arm and the blood is then spun down in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelet count. Platelets are valuable because they contain numerous growth and healing factors.

During the microneedling session, the PRP is applied topically and injected into your face. The microchannels formed by the MicroPen allow for greater absorption of the valuable PRP compound. The injections into key areas encourage skin healing and renewal so your cells turn over effectively and accelerate collagen production. You end up with hydrated, glowing skin that appears firmer and fresher.
